Omarchy is a Linux distribution created and controlled by David Heinemeier Hansson, usually known as DHH. DHH is the founder and CTO of 37signals (formerly Basecamp) and creator of Ruby on Rails.

In the last year DHH has also called for the ethnic cleansing of Europe.

In “As I remember London,” he voiced support for ethnically cleansing London of minorities. In “Wolves, sheep, and gypsies,” he called for the ethnic cleansing of Romani people across Europe, comparing them to wolves.

He is, in short, an outspoken bigot who supports programs of mass death and forced migration of minority communities.

This bigotry is also not new. In 2023, Duke University divested from Basecamp over prior events including reporting that Basecamp employees maintained a racially-charged list of “funny” customer names and DHH’s vocal public support for anti-diversity actions by the U.S. Supreme Court and by other companies.

Today the Omacom Foundation, which financially supports development of Omarchy and is controlled by DHH, announced that 1Password has committed $300,000 to them over the next three years. 1Password is the first corporate sponsor of Omarchy that is not itself owned by DHH. DHH’s company 37signals has also committed $300,000; all other named donors are wealthy individuals.

Apparently DHH’s support for ethnic cleansing is not disqualifying to 1Password.

I am a longtime user and supporter of 1Password. I pushed my family to adopt it, encouraged friends to use it, and have promoted it online. The 1Password team were early and vocal adopters of the Rust programming language, and have done good work in contributing back to the Rust community with open source libraries.

However, financing bigotry like this is crossing a red line. I’ve contacted 1Password with my opposition to this Omacom Foundation commitment, and if it is not walked back, I will migrate my family off of 1Password and never give them another dollar.

If you are a 1Password user, I recommend you do the same: contact 1Password with your opposition to this funding for Omarchy, and divest from the company if they do not change course.

If you are a Rustacean working at 1Password, please raise hell within the company about how unacceptable this is.

If your employer is a corporate customer of 1Password, please raise hell within your company about the reputational risk of financing support for ethnic cleansing.

There are many worthwhile projects in the Linux ecosystem that would be worthy recipients of $300,000. Giving it to Omarchy is unacceptable.

Omarchy is created and owned by David Heinemeier Hansson. In the last year, David has published
articles calling for the mass deportation of Romani in Europe, comparing them to invasive wolves
(see: https://world.hey.com/dhh/wolves-sheep-and-gypsies-ba44af6a) and for the ethnic cleansing of
minorities from London (see: https://world.hey.com/dhh/as-i-remember-london-e7d38e64).

David's bigoted behavior has been public for many years. Back in 2023, Duke University cancelled
contracts with Basecamp, a DHH-owned product, over these issues

As a longtime 1Password Family account customer, I am disgusted that 1Password is giving money to
this project, and I demand the company rescind the deal with Omarchy, refuse to pay the remaining
$200,000, and attempt to claw back the $100,000 already paid.
